I'm happy to admit that my knowledge of Greek wine varieties is limited, but it's great to see climate appropriate vines like these being planted.
I'm confident to say that these are the only Xynisteri vines in the ground in Australia. Planted in 2021, the variety is most popular in Cyprus.
An attractive colour on the eye, it offers some morning sunrise vibes. It presents rich scents not dissimilar to Roussanne, which I find curious, as the variety is often said to be similar to Pinot Gris. Despite the richer opening, there is a delicate presence to taste. Honeyed tones, preserved lemons, apricot kernel, green pears and poached pears deliver a broad flavour spectrum with a lick of pie apple for good measure. A subtle spice ticks away, offering a suggestion of ginger. The tempered acidity has me thinking of pan-fried fish in a butter and sage sauce. A great debut, I'll be keen to observe its progress over the upcoming vintages.
