This Hilltops Rosé brings together Nebbiolo and Rondinella (80/20), the latter a variety I’ve never encountered before. Isn't discovery a joyous thing! A few hours on skins before a light pressing, followed by nine months in tank on light lees, has produced a dry wine with zero residual sugar.
Red currants and red berries lead into the white flesh of strawberry and a flicker of mandarin peel, with soft spices adding some gentle interest. There’s respectable length, but this is definitely a Rosé that would benefit from food by its side. There is nothing offensive here, it simply cruises along without any great fuss, delivering a pleasant, easy-going drink.
The colour is on the darker side of the spectrum, and given Rosé is often judged with the eyes first, a paler appearance could certainly enhance its appeal. In all, it's a wine with merit.
