Quite an intriguing wine, this Shiraz Malbec keeps its cards close to its chest yet there is a mystique that keeps drawing you back for more time and again.
The curious scent of a ferment pops up on opening. It's a wine I found to build nicely over a couple of days so there is no doubt some medium-term aging will be its friend.
Made with 50% whole bunch Shiraz, I did wonder whether the stalks were ripe given the shade of green that slides in. Two days later that had passed.
Skinsy red plums, red apple, baked raspberry and burnt toast make the first impression. Tense, dark chocolate torte and cola add interest with smoked meats. Paprika and steak rub come to mind too. Ripples of spice seem to flow effortlessly on a long, dusty and powdery finish with a granite minerality keen to be part of the action. The bones are there for something quite smart. For now, give it time and it'll find its happy place.
Drink to five years.
