Winmark Icon 72 Chardonnay 2021

Named after the vines planted in 1972, Winmark is quite a beautiful vineyard in the Hunter Valley sub-region of Broke. A brand entirely devoted to Chardonnay (rejoice!), it has certainly made its mark after a few years.

The vineyard is in pristine order thanks to viticulturist Liz Riley and the grounds are dotted with fascinating artwork and sculptures. An art gallery adjoining the cellar door adds further interest for those seeking to venture out that little bit further than Pokolbin. You can even stay a little longer at one of the few accommodation options onsite. To cap off the incredible rise of Winmark in recent years, the cellar door won the coveted Cellar Door of the Year award at the Hunter Valley Legends Awards in 2023.

I had a look at this wine in 2022 soon after release and the additional 12 months of bottle age has certainly done its thing. The shape and feel have elevated somewhat.

The fruit was hand-picked, whole bunch pressed with wild fermentation and seeing French oak for eleven months. Concentrated and focused, sheets of vanilla and toast caress the palate. Cashews add detail along with a white-fleshed nectarine drive. Yellow flower aromas add a pretty factor and the fine tickle of spice in the form of ginger biscuits just purs. A wine that develops wonderfully in the glass, I suspect it will improve further with some more bottle age.
