Torbreck Runrig 2016

Two words summarise this best: charming and finesse. What a brilliant wine we have here.

Made with 2% Viognier, it gives an aromatic lift and smooths the texture across the palate. A blend of six vineyards and seeing 30 months in French oak (50% new), the old clone Shiraz ripens slower and later Ian Hongell tells me.

Tasted at the Torbreck launch, wow! Devine. Silky and generous without clout. It's that refreshing shower that glides over the landscape brushing everything in its path with supreme delicacy. Cedar, mulberries, fruit bun spices, there is a delicious Christmas cake beauty about it that is similar to the one my mother bakes annually (you need to try it). Long and silky with polished edges, it runs long and is in mint condition. It's a wine that demonstrates the benefit of longevity and ageing when tasted beside its 2020 sibling. Still youthful, there is plenty of pleasure left in this very tidy package. Just brilliant.
