Torbreck Runrig 2020

From the cooler 2020 vintage, the Runrig was down a quarter on normal production. Off some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world, this is an assemblage of six vineyards with a dollop of Viognier for good measure.

This release sees 30 months in French oak (50% new). Tasted alongside the 2016, it was a fabulous opportunity to see where this wine is headed.

A glorious feel and lineage connect the two wines. I was impressed by the shape and the tannins as they both present in a similar manner. Not surprisingly, the oak shows with cedar prominent and some vanilla pod tucking in behind. Although I didn't get to see this in the glass as long as I would have preferred (this was tasted at the Torbreck launch lunch), a rum and raisin character slowly unfurled. Chocolate tart and milk chocolate build momentum and are layered on thick. Dark fruits go about their work with super fine spices etched into the frame.  A wine that reaches all corners and every crevice of the mouth, it surely is a class act. Don't rush to enjoy this anytime soon.
