Glover Wines Oakey Creek Semillon 2022

Fresh and contemporary, this is a Semillon that you want to rip into right now. A most impressive debut release from Emily Glover.

Having built her winemaking career from the ground up, those formative cellar hand days have paid dividends. Now a winemaker at De Iuliis Wines in the Hunter Valley, she acquired some fruit from the famed Oakey Creek vineyard in her previous role at Brokenwood to kick-start her little side project.

Intent to explore great parcels of fruit, after tasting this Semillon, all I can say is watch this space.

This was tasted over lunch with an array of other wines at a recent media famil in the Hunter Valley. Although my time with the wine was brief, it certainly left a lasting impression.

So light and bright in the glass, this is small-batch winemaking at its best. Only one tonne of fruit was processed and the end result reflects Glover's aim of texture with a faint touch of residual sugar. Delicate ribbons of lemon zest and lemon juice course their way through wine. Waltzing through the mouth, you get the sense that the fruit is floating such is the delicacy. Wonderfully balanced, the acid is precise. Of the three Semillons in front of me, this was drained in no time. And looking at those around me, their empty glasses seemed to share the same sentiment.

Yet to be released, but when it is, run - don't walk.
