The Adelaide Hills is a Mencia hot spot at the moment. There are a vast array of interpretations of the variety which builds the curiosity factor. This release from Nepenthe is a spicy and dense rendition.
The second release of this limited production, it is encrusted with black pepper as dark plums and plum compote land front and centre. Licorice and drunken blackcurrants build positive momentum through the mouth. A weightier and bigger style of Mencia than I have been accustomed to from the region, the finish drives long with brick dust tannins. Throw this at a lamb cutlet on the coals.
Drink to five years.
