Schild Estate Moorooroo Shiraz 2020

Planted in 1847, the Moorooroo vineyard is home to the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Rich, dense and brooding, this is an excellent wine from Schild Estate.

The name Moorooroo means ‘meeting of two waters’ – Jacob’s Creek and the North Para River.

Moorooroo Vineyard
Having personally walked among the vines of this historic site, it’s incredible to think that some of these 176-year-old vines are capable of producing fruit. But they do and it’s phenomenal!
The vines are listed in the Ancestor category due to their 125 years+ age.
Originally, 16 rows were planted by Johan and William Jacob in 1847 - South Australia was only eleven years young at the time.

What makes the Moorooroo vineyard even more remarkable is that it was destined to be levelled during the vine pull scheme in 1984. Vines were plucked from the ground left, right and centre. But all of a sudden the tractor broke down. And that was that. Four rows and 200 vines of history were preserved by mechanical error. One could suggest it was fate.

Seeing a combination of new and seasoned French oak for 18-24 months, the generosity of this Shiraz is impressive. Scents of cedar and coffee oak early, this calmed over a couple of days of tasting. Clearly a wine for the long term, it shows dark plums and is flooded with dark berry fruit. Fruit compote and Christmas cake highlights cruise about. Vanilla and dark chocolate rise up with more time under their belt, but the quality is shown with the fine array of exotic spices and fruit bun spices that wrap themselves around a long and memorable finish. Tuck it away for a few years and your patience will be rewarded.
