Planted in 1889, the Tri-Centenary block has been around for three centuries, hence the name. A Grenache like no other, the weight and complexity don't match the bright colour in the glass. This is an impressive wine.
What sets this Grenache apart from the rest is the extended maceration of 250 days on skins (a typo on the labels says 350 - oops). Light in the glass, waves of Campari, red berries, blackberries with an ever so subtle touch of licorice fold into one another. Over a few days of tasting it shifts gear and softens to show delicate earthiness and red plums. Persistent with a measured weight, some more bottle age will help this shine furthermore. Fine spices reach long on a moreish and sophisticated finish. If you enjoy Central Otago Pinot Noir, you'd be most comfortable here. This is a fabulous wine.
