Mt Bera Amphitheatre Pinot Noir Zweigelt 2023

A blend of Pinot Noir and Zweigelt (50/50) from Adelaide Hills producer Mt Bera, this Amphitheatre 2023 cranks the delish dial high.

Zweigelt is little known in Australia. The result of bringing together St Laurent and Blaufrankish, the latter is the most popular variety in Austria.

The parcels were fermented separately with 15% whole bunches used for the Pinot Noir.

There is a rustic shade to its personality that I find gravitating. Dark cherries and all the Pinot things stamp their trademark but it's the tension and Black Forest like presence that has me coming back time and again. Blaufrankish is known for its depth and its fingerprints are evident through the Zweigelt component. Chocolate-dipped raspberries, a flash of beef stock, barbecue rub spices and firmish powdery tannins build a robust frame that will have this aging gracefully for many years yet. It's a very clever wine and oozes drinkability. A big yes from me.
