The Hunt for Mrs Oliver could easily be turned into a biopic and the protagonist would be Corrina Wright's high-energy and high-octane-seeking friend, Valtteri Bottas. Much like this sparkling Fiano, Bottas is calm, composed, and a little mysterious, until he suddenly unleashes pure, turbo-charged chaos on track. Thank goodness there is no chaos here.
This traditional method sparkling highlights the versatility of Fiano, demonstrating that it can be picked early while still retaining vibrant acidity.
Energetic fizz launches from the glass that is free-flowing just like the wind rushing through Valtteri’s mullet. Spending a couple of years on lees, this has developed fabulous complexity. Cashews and hazelnuts sit alongside wafers and water crackers. Poached pears, canned pear fruit, golden apple and Mutsu apple weave through the palate. Barley sugar adds appeal balanced by lemon zest and preserved lemons with a touch of sea foam. The texture is fine and slippery, giving the wine a graceful flow. Brioche and sourdough notes linger to add depth and savoury charm. A considered and beautifully detailed sparkling that speaks with quiet confidence and is ready to embrace good humour, much like the way Valtteri carries himself. A great sparkling worth getting around.
