Pirate Cru Wines Ban Shé Grenache 2012

I spent some time with Jennifer Graham and Dirk Pettigrew from Pirate Cru Wines earlier this week. Their passion for the Barossa and their brand is infectious. There is a terrific story behind this wine. Jen and Dirk are very well researched and the links to their wines is impressive. This Ban Shé refers to the Victorian period with "romantic" being the keyword. Romantic in terms of dreaming and what's on the horizon Dirk tells me. A period of enlightenment you could say. This Grenache provides enlightenment. Ten years old without a splinter of oak. Gee, it looks good. Very good.

Pizzini Per Gli Angeli 2012

Christmas pudding in a glass is a more than apt description of this hypnotic dessert wine from Pizzini. Per Gli Angeli is Italian for 'For the Angels". Made in the Vin Santo style, when you consider the winemaking process, the angels seem to have taken their fair share too. This is simply sublime.

Dr Plonk The Good Doctor's Tonic 2012

Wines you don't expect to bowl you over and they do. Add this one to that surprise packet list. What a cracker we have here! It's a big, voluptuous number. Just on 10 years old, the heft it carries could potentially have Covid curing capabilities. Don't quote me but we'll wait for the lab to confirm that...

Cirillo 1850 Old Vine Grenache 2012

International Grenache Day came and went in its glory. I love the variety but clearly not all are. I received a tweet which described the variety, "...start with raspberry cordial as it would prepare your palate for what was to follow." Clearly not a Grenache fan. You just gotta know how to find the good stuff and here, front and centre, is a cracking wine. The furthermost thing from raspberry cordial and boiled lollies, the savoury characters which sit atop the shoulders of beautiful fruit are adorable.

Geoff Merrill Cilento Sangiovese 2012

Named after Geoff Merrill's great grandfather Joseph Cilento who immigrated to Australia in the late 1800's. This sees 27 months in American oak. Gee it's a drinking well at the moment.
