This Pizzini L'Aquila Nebbiolo made a most impressive entrance, but it really broke into a respectable stride over a few days of tasting, which proves once more that Nebbiolo with some bottle age shines best.
Sourced from two estate vineyards with one north-facing and warmer while the other is east-facing and cooler, it opens with red flowers and crushed petals, orange peel and Negroni things, plus a veneer of Coppa adds a delightful savoury meatiness. Licorice, a flicker of dark chocolate nibs and an earthy drive wrap themselves around the core of plummy fruit. The tannins are still a little firm but that powder is unmistakable and delightfully moreish. A wine that will continue to evolve and improve, it's only early days for this gem.
