Part of a brace of wines that sit on top of the Gundog Estate range, this Flintlock Shiraz comes from the Hilltops region of NSW.
Dark berries, plums, cola, pan juices and red peppercorns make the first impression. Sixteen months in French oak (25% new) imparts some cedar, caramel and clove nuances. On opening, there was a lemony tang but this calmed over a few days of tasting. It's a bit so-so through the mouth. It's not overly 'sit up' worthy nor is it layered with intrigue. If anything, it does the job but for the asking price, you want a bit more than so-so. Fine grippy tannins have the last word on a reasonable length, but on reflection, given the range choice, I'd hunt down the Marksman (Canberra) or Rare Game (Hunter Valley) for the same money.
