From the Donaldson family's sustainably farmed vineyards in North Canterbury comes this superb expression of Pinot Noir and it is easy to see why Pegasus Bay is so highly regarded both in New Zealand and abroad.
Made with 40% whole bunches, this is a seamless wine that captures everything about Pinot Noir and its Waipara soils. It sees French oak (30% new) for 15 months.
Draped in lacy and evocative spices, this Estate Pinot is a step up from the super value Main Divide Pinot that is half the price. Give it some air and pretty scents of purple flowers rise up as does mushroom compost, tilled earth, truffles and all those beautiful savoury things this variety can deliver. Red and dark berry fruits mingle with a neat apricot kernel cameo - nice! Some meatiness is evident but this composed and silky wine drags you closer the longer you sit beside it. A shimmer of brown spices coil around the mouth building further interest and demanding that you come back for more. Resistance is futile - go here.
