Elegant and fine-tuned, this Merricks is a superb Pinot Noir from Montalto.
Planted in 1998 and sitting 55 metres above sea level on free-draining brown and grey loams, MV6 takes up most of the site with some 114 and 115.
The fruit was sorted, destemmed and cold soaked for 5 days before wild fermentation took place. A seven day post-ferment maceration took place. Once pressed, the wine was sent to French oak (27% new) for eleven months.
Red cherries and plums sizzle with porcine mushrooms, twigs and undergrowth, orange peel, dried herbs and cherry pips. The succulent fruit holds the upper hand ever so slightly as delicate waves of spices wash through. Fine, dusty tannins give the impression they are sprayed on in a delicate mist and that length just goes on and on. Another belter of a Pinot from Simon Black.
