Golden Grove Estate Gran Reserva Tempranillo 2018

It's fair to say not many handle Tempranillo like this in Australia and the longevity this exudes is a credit to the making. From the oldest Tempranillo vines at Golden Grove Estate, the depth, density and complexity will ensure this will continue to live long.

Coming off vines planted in 2001, it sees 36 months in American oak and then 24 months in bottle before release, the Gran Reserva wines are only produced in exceptional years. Tasted over three days, time was its friend and it glistened. The gradual emergence from its chrysalis over a few days highlighted its ability to age comfortably.

A platter of interest diffuses from the first swirl, think hazelnuts, latte, dense plums and cherry liqueur and cola. The mid-palate is a complex beast with respectable weight showing charcuterie board meatiness and bacon hock highlights with a fine dusting of dried Mediterranean herbs. Each time I return something new leaps out - beautiful! Finishing with black tea and brick dust tannins, there is a moreishness and regal feel about its carry. It's an excellent wine without doubt but give it time in a decanter to ensure you see it at its best.
