Hayes Family Wines Estate Mataro 2023

Bright, welcoming and energised aromas spill from the glass. It's an invitation hard to refuse. As time goes on it bunkers down and gets serious. Another ripping Mataro from Hayes Family Wines.

If you sat down to share a glass with winemaker Andrew Seppelt, he would reach for a glass of Mataro nine times out of ten such is his love for the variety. This 2023 is a beauty once again.

From sustainably farmed and certified organic survivor vines (70 years+) planted in the 1940s, this wine used to be known as the Block 3 single vineyard, however, the 2023 sees a little of Block 4 (directly behind running perpendicular to Block 3) blended in hence the renaming to simply the Estate.

Sauteed mushrooms, blueberries, mulberries and dried petals all seek your approval. It offers an outstretched hand and a joyous comforting smile. Fine spices skirt the edges with some truffles, earthiness and meatiness as only Mataro knows how. Barbecued steak, pan juices and raspberry coulis ripple throughout. There's great width through the mouth and that length just hangs as those blue and purple fruits just keep circling back. Dusty, almost chalky tannins plant themselves on a long and moreish finish. It's a mouthful of delish. Come at me!

Drink to eight years.
