The consistency of these Gundog Estate wines is impressive. An expansive range with fruit sourced from a variety of regions apart from their Hunter Valley base, this medium-bodied Hunter's Shiraz hits the right notes.
A blend of two vineyards, it combines fruit grown on light clay loam in Lovedale and the red volcanic clay and basalt from a site hugging the range in Pokolbin. It sees 14 months in French oak (20% new).
A meaty introduction lands in your lap. Bacon hock and burnt ends are what I'm thinking of with char and charcoal notes. The joys of a quality charcuterie board aren't far from the action either. Already my mind is drawn to a great steak over the coals, dark plums and berries drive the fruit profile. Wonderfully silky, it's quite seductive in its presence. Soft spices curl around the mouth bringing barbecue rub spices and flirtatious baking spices. Get the right staff on the floor in a steak restaurant and this will run out the door.
