I was to be sent the pre-release SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay 2024 for review, but it looks like the work experience kid in the warehouse got involved. Alas, this 2023 is exceptional in its own right.
I first reviewed this 2023 back in November 2024, and even though it was in great shape back then, nabbing 95 points for its trouble, an extra year in the bottle has done its thing. Don't ever underestimate bottle age with quality Chardonnay.
The fruit was whole bunch pressed before wild yeast fermentation took place in French oak (40% new) and spent 10 months in barrel on full lees.
Concentrated white fleshed peaches and nectarines take the stage with shades of green mango loitering in the background. The creaminess is where things have stepped up. Think creme brulee, butterscotch and custard powder and fine, lacy ribbons of vanilla cream. That band of creaminess is elite. Flinty with struck match continue to pur with a delightful grapefruit acid tang and delicate nuttiness, not to mention the fine ginger spices that come with the territory. Layered, considered and detailed, these Margaret River Chardonnays don't miss.
