Another year and another reason to raise a glass! In my 15th year, I still pinch myself at how far things have progressed. Qwine Reviews has now amassed over 8000 reviews and 2025 is my biggest year with 761 reviews posted! Coupled with more than 2 million website hits, the momentum continues to blow me away.
But it's not the numbers that drive me - it's the people and experiences. During the course of the year, I judged at two wine shows - the Orange Wine Show and the RASQ Mediterranean Wine Show. Contributions were also made to some publications and I even had the luxury of tasting my way around the Geographe region (Western Australia) from the comfort of my tasting bench after several dozen wines landed on my doorstep. What a great initiative this was by the Geographe region! But one of my absolute highlights was taking the mic to MC the Coonawarra Vignerons Cup race day back in January hosting 730 guests in the VIP marquee. A most unforgettable day!
I'm forever grateful for the connections forged along the way. Time spent on the ground in the Clare Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra regions was enriching and filled my bucket. And then there was Italy! Three incredible weeks travelling from Piedmont in the north to Campania in the south, soaking up the knowledge and passion of winemakers who so generously gave me their time.
Back home, and although the Australian industry has had its challenges, there is much to embrace and celebrate. Climate appropriate varieties are gaining some serious traction and the impact is noticeable on premise too, with many sommeliers now offering a diverse range of wines to elevate dining experiences.
Bravo to the establishments that have taken the plunge to support 100% Australian wine, beer and spirits on their list. A bold move, some may say, but such support will only champion our producers and sharpen our collective palates.
Above all, many thanks to the winemakers, producers and marketers for your support and trusting me to review your wines. The privilege is never lost on me and it is something I am most grateful for.
A big thanks to my readership - you are the reason I do this. Knowing my words spark curiosity and pique your interest brightens my day no end. And the subsequent feedback and conversations shared - gold!
Don't forget, you are welcome to subscribe to my free email subscription or follow along on my social channels (Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Facebook).
My wish for 2026? Explore that variety you have never tried or cannot quite pronounce - it may become your new favourite. But importantly, support small businesses, independent wine stores, small family producers and buy directly from them. They deserve the margin far more than the shareholders of large chain retailers.
Finally, The Best of 2025! It's no easy task trying to piece this list together. Some wines stand out while others wrestle with one another to see who comes out on top. As I look at the list below, I'm proud of the diversity it represents.
Wishing you all every joy, success and happiness for 2026!
Cheers,
Steve
