From the south facing slopes of Gruyere in the Yarra Valley comes this Squitchy Lane Chardonnay. With vibrant fruit and a tension that coils around the mouth, a parade of fine spices drives long on its tail.
Whole bunch pressed, it sees nine months in French oak (28% new) with some spontaneous malolactic fermentation.
White fleshed stone fruit and lemon meringue pie highlights leap out of the blocks to wow you early on but things thin out although there is enough life to let you know that it is still kicking. After leaving it for a while, time in the glass builds some shape and momentum with seductive sheets of creaminess. Perhaps aging this a little may be of benefit? A glorious lemon ad grapefruit tang draws me closer on an engaging finish. Give me a glass with a casual Sunday lunch and I won't complain.
