Texture aplenty, The Eleven 2023 carries a little more weight compared to its Tuerong sibling. Planted in 1985, this is the oldest block at Montalto. Sitting 106 metres above on red clay soils, these eleven rows of vines are located outside the cellar door.
Whole bunch pressed to French oak (27.3% new to be exact), it went through wild yeast fermentation and 100% MLF and spent eleven months in barrel.
The oak protrudes a little for now but this will settle. Detailed as ever, layers of interest peel back with ease. Butterscotch, praline, buttered popcorn, barbecued peach, toasted cashews and hazelnuts - what an intro. There is an even-handedness with a little generosity too. Toasted brioche, a lemony tang with the suggestion of dehydrated pineapple and a lick of mango, there is plenty here to consider. Almond meal tacks onto the tail and that finish seems unstoppable. It's an excellent wine that will reward for many years yet.
Drink to eight years.
