Lyons Will Farrawell Pinot Noir 2023

From Lyons Will's oldest vineyard, the Farrawell was planted by Bob and Barbara Farrawell in 1996. It's a wine that came across closed and keeping its secrets close to its chest, give it some to to show its best.

Perched 510 metres above, the site is planted to D5V12, MV6,115 (70/20/10). Handled similarly to The Greys, the fruit was handpicked with 30% whole bunches used as well as semi-carbonic maceration. Wild yeast fermented, it saw 30% new French oak barriques for 12 months. Only 75 cases were produced.

There is no mistaking the detail, but the tension and tight structure took a little coaxing to finally step forward. Once it found its feet, every whiff and sip revealed something new. Concentrated plums and mulberries, red currants and sour cherries drive the fruit profile ably supported by mushroom broth, puffs of dusty road, undergrowth and tree bark. Fine spices and cinnamon drive long on a memorable and memorable finish. Wonderfully medium-bodied, time will be its friend. I felt the The Greys was a much more convincing wine for now, but regardless, this set of Pinots from Lyons Will, including the Estate, once more showcases the esteemed quality of this producer.
