The Smoking Barrel from Gundog Estate is an approachable and rock-solid expression of medium-bodied Shiraz that is sourced from the Hilltops, Hunter Valley and Canberra district.
And although its approachability is its strength, it just doesn't go to that next level to elevate the experience. It's all red fruit and berries, dark chocolate, touches of oak and soft spices. But things are just ticking away without any great fanfare. Not that you need fanfare, but if reliability is your go-to, you won't lose with this easy slurp in your glass. It gets a tick from me.
