Part of the Small Batch range, this Curtis Shiraz has a minimalist label with an attractive teal colour which I find quite eye catching. A bold and rich wine, this will cut through a roast beef with ease.
A wine that certainly needs food by its side, it still possesses an unrefined edge which is probably not what you'd expect particularly with four years already under its belt. I generally steer clear of commenting on pricing but I'm unsure what makes this a $100 RRP wine. The fruit is said to be sourced from 80 year old vines but there is no mention of the site nor its pedigree. Hmm...
Seeing a mix of new and two year old American oak for an unknown period, it kicks off with baked plums, dark cherries, dark chocolate, Christmas cake feels and a touch of red currants too. A ripe, extracted and dense style, it's drying leaving cocoa like tannins in its wake. It's a reasonable drink, but the asking price probably demands better than that.
