Steels Gate BSB The Sebastian 2022

This is a blend consisting of a third each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot that slowly reveals itself, keeping a few cards tucked firmly up its sleeve.

Leafy Cabernet notes, roasted capsicum, red currants and blackberries emerge first, supported by licorice, dried herbs, sage and a subtle bay leaf savouriness. A gentle rub of earthiness threads its way throughout, while a faint menthol note adds another layer of complexity. At four years of age, there's still plenty of tension and energy coursing through its veins. The fruit feels tightly wound, reluctant to give everything away at once, which I don't mind. Bright acidity cuts a determined path through the palate, suggesting this wine has its sights set on a long future rather than immediate gratification. What impressed me most was its sense of restraint. It keeps its secrets close, rewarding patience rather than demanding attention. Give it a long decant and the pieces begin to fall into place, with the fruit and savoury elements finding greater harmony. It's nicely done.
