The Home Block Chardonnay from Steels Gate has a broad, easy-going personality.
Custard apple, white-fleshed peach and apples provide the fruit, with canned apple juice adding a little extra twist to the profile. The palate, mind you, is quite flat, lacking the drive and energy I’d hope to see. A creamed corn and a Greek yoghurt-like creaminess give it plenty of breadth.
Soft spices add a gentle flourish through the finish, but ultimately this is more about softness and generosity than detail or precision.
It goes okay. A straightforward Chardonnay that offers plenty of creamy breadth, but doesn’t quite have the shape or energy to really lift it above the pack.
