Keep an eye on this label. While the BPD might not be the first Hunter Valley Shiraz you reach for, it’s quietly building a case to become one. In a region blessed with some heavyweight company, John Wallace Wines continues to carve out its own identity.
This release opens with an inviting mix of blueberries, dark cherries, pan juices and cola, with a savoury bacon hock note adding extra appeal. The palate is where the excitement levels are elevated. There's a burst of energy through the mid-palate that pops beautifully, bringing plenty of juicy fruit and an attractive drink-me-now vibe. Fresh acidity keeps everything moving with purpose and gives the wine a sense of brightness and flow. Oak is handled smartly too, sitting quietly in the background, meekly raising its hand but doing its best not to be noticed. It adds shape rather than flavour, allowing the fruit to remain front and centre. An engaging, honest Shiraz that suggests this is a label with plenty of upside yet. Great stuff!
