I love my Vermentino bright, fresh and oozing a seductive whiff of sea spray, but this release from Meteora Vineyard has more of a rounded, voluptuous presence.
Lemons are the usual star of the show, but here I see golden apple, custard apple, bruised apple and some slippery pastry notes. The palate comes across a little disjointed - that flow and zippy vibe is replaced by a rolling ball. The acidity is tense and sneaks up high on the palate with ginger and cinnamon spices consuming the finish. It's a wine that needs food which for me is a juxtaposition because Vermentino has the power to elevate, burst from the glass and bring copious amounts of joy all on its own. Here, I feel it's dragging its heels rather than sprinting out of the blocks and screaming for others to join it by the pool or in the sunshine. I'd prefer others
