With Steve Flamsteed coming on board as a consultant to help steer the ship, one of the first moves he made was to revive the Williams Crossing range and introduce a Reserve Pinot Noir.
Selected as a "best of the best" blend rather than from a single site, this Pinot Noir immediately suggests that patience will be rewarded. On opening, the oak protrudes noticeably, dragging a train of earthy characters in its wake. Strawberry and raspberry fruit sit amongst darker fruits, cedar, tea tree, orange peel, apricot kernel and black tea bag notes with dried leaves and woodsy spices adding further complexity. By day three, pine needles and mushroom compost step confidently into the limelight as the wine settles considerably and begins to find its groove. The fruit, oak and savoury elements become more harmonious. Like many Curly Flat wines, this feels built for the long haul and I'd love to revisit it in five years' time. There is something brewing here and it will be well worth the wait.
