One of the big surprise packets during my recent trip to Orange was Cabernet Franc. I knew there was a bit of it around but the volume and range of producers I discovered was exciting. A variety that is performing exceptionally well in the region, this release from Ross Hill was one of the best.
Another key take away was that the lower sites produce better reds with the higher sites producing better whites. This Cabernet Franc comes from a site 750m above and it sees 40% new French oak. Quite savoury, there was a good dose of black and red berry fruits. Sauteed mushrooms, puffs of earth and tomato paste drive the savoury profile. Blackcurrants build steady momentum and a lip smacking moreishness. The drive and reach are superb with fine brickdust tannins capping off a classy wine. Highly recommended!
